Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer had the unfortunate honour of being the man in charge when the club was relegated from the Premier League for the first time.

The former striker was brought in as manager for eight games as a hail Mary by then owner Mike Ashley, and despite being unable to guide the club to safety, Big Al was more than keen to take the job on full time, however, he wasn't given the opportunity to prove his worth after Ashley let him go at the end of the season.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer recalls what happened in the small hours of the morning the night before that fateful game that saw Newcastle's Premier League dream end.

Alan Shearer had Gary Lineker in stitches

We've heard some excuses in our time, but Shearer's take the cake.

"I'm not kidding, there's a bloke and a woman on the piano and the bloke's giving the woman one in my room."

Shearer goes on to say that he has no idea how they got in, whether they were staff who thought the room was empty or what, but can you imagine?

Shearer must have been haunted by those images all day

On another note ... how fancy was the hotel Shearer was staying in that there was a piano in the room? He definitely didn't stay in the Travelodge did he?

We highly doubt that the actions of that couple had any bearing on the game as Shearer was on the touchline rather than on the pitch so he can't even use that as an excuse.

Still, at least that day wasn't a total write-off for Shearer, eh?
