Alan Shearer pulled no punches when laying into Newcastle United's 'unacceptable' performance on Match of the Day

Newcastle United were humbled by Manchester City at the Etihad yesterday, with the champions securing the easiest win of their entire season.

Man City haven't been great this season, and it felt like it was our time going into the game. Newcastle have never won at the Etihad, and it just felt like the stars were aligned to break that hoodoo.

Unfortunately, Eddie Howe's boys decided to work from home, and their hologram avatars weren't much use in getting tight to their men, and as a result, Man City were afforded the freedom of the Eithad to move around the pitch in acres of space at any given opportunity.

It looked bad enough on the day, but seeing it highlighted on Match of the Day just how much space we gave their players, it's actually sickening.

Alan Shearer was in the MotD studio, and to say he wasn't a happy man would be an understatement. While he does acknowledge that City, particularly Omar Marmoush, played well, his attack of Newcastle was scathing.

"Much better from Manchester City, but it was an absolute horror show from Newcastle United, it was an unacceptable performance.

"Whether so many players had one eye on the cup final or what, I don't know, but they were all over the place today, they were dreadful."

It's honestly a massive shame that they aren't allowed to swear on Match of the Day because we'd love to hear Shearer's unfiltered thoughts. Hopefully he gives them on The Rest Is Football.

Normally, after a match, I'm sniffing around trying to find reactions, quotes and insight and soaking up all the content I can, but after yesterday, I did my match report and went to bed out of the way. Even when watching MotD for Shearer's comments, I skipped the match and went straight to the studio.

Now I've got to subject myself to Eddie Howe's interviews and player reactions, and I just don't want to. I've covered some poor performances from Newcastle before, sure, but there was just something different about this one.
