Newcastle United fought back from 1-3 down to win 4-3 on Saturday as West Ham United gave the Magpies a game and a half.
The 4-3 scoreline accurately reflected the end-to-end nature of the game which had Newcastle fans on a rollercoaster of emotions. After taking the lead via an Alexander Isak penalty in the sixth minute, the Toon Army were expecting to run riot, but found themselves going in a goal behind at half time thanks to some woeful defending and a cheeky quickly taken free-kick.
Newcastle's day got worse just a few minutes into the second half as Jarrod Bowen made it 3-1 and Newcastle fans were ready to throw in the towel. Not on the game, but the entire season, but thankfully our players had other ideas.
Anthony Gordon won the Magpies another penalty which was slotted home once again by Alexander Isak, before super-sub, only on because of an injury to another sub, Harvey Barnes bagged himself a brace to tie up the game and then grab the winner.
The three Newcastle players that were mentioned there are the ones that Alan Shearer deemed worthy of a place in his Premier League Team of the Week for Match Week 30.
Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)
"Bags of energy, a tireless work-rate and set up the winning goal in a sensational comeback win against West Ham."
Alexander Isak (Newcastle)
"Kept his cool to score two penalties and then produced a great assist for Barnes' equaliser. Wonderful display."
Harvey Barnes (Newcastle)
"Newcastle looked dead and buried at 3-1 down, but two goals in seven minutes - that is how to make an impact as a sub!"
Nobody contributed more to the game for Newcastle than those three, but a couple of honourable mentions must go out to Elliot Anderson and Lewis Hall who both massively impacted the game when coming off the bench.
We believe that both youngsters have earned themselves a spot in tonight's starting lineup when the Magpies face off against Everton and St James' Park.
Lewis Hall is more likely to get the nod simply because of the lack of numbers in defence, but for us, Anderson should find himself in the side tonight ahead of Sean Longstaff who should be dropped purely for that miss on Saturday alone.
At the same time, Joe Willock is still finding his way back into the groove since his return from injury and could also make way for Anderson. But that being said, we imagine Eddie Howe will stick with Longstaff and Willock either side of Bruno Guimaraes. We can't have too many changes, can we?
