'A great spectacle': Simon Jordan is excited by the prospect of the return of Tyne-Wear derbies in Premier League but has warning for Sunderland

Sunderland scored in extra time on Tuesday night at the Stadium of Light to book themselves a trip to Wembley to face Sheffield United in the Championship Play-Off final.

This, of course, means the Mackems are now just 90 minutes away from returning to the Premier League, where they will come up against Newcastle United.

The absence of a Tyne-Wear derby in the Premier League for almost 10 years has admittedly been hilarious, as it has mostly been because Sunderland were in leagues below Newcastle, but it's also kind of sad, as the Tyne-Wear derby has always been one of the more exciting in English football.

Obviously, Sunderland will need to defeat Sheffield United, who finished 14 points ahead of them (having had two points deducted), and also breezed into the final with a 6-0 aggregate win over Bristol City, compared to Sunderland, who limped over the line against Coventry.

A cracking piece of sh*thousery the last time the two sides met

Simon Jordan has warned Sunderland that Newcastle are a 'different beast'

I still can't drag myself off this fence - it would be good to have the derby days back, but it would also be hilarious to see Sunderland go to Wembley and lose in the same season Newcastle went there and lifted a trophy.

Should Sunderland defy the odds and make it to the promised land, though, TalkSPORT's Simon Jordan doesn't fancy their chances when coming up against the Magpies (h/t Sunderland Echo).

“When they play Newcastle United, there will be a gulf in difference between the two clubs, irrespective of how much money they want to spend in the transfer window this summer. And it will have to be confined because they will be restricted by the governance of the PSR [Profit and Sustainability Rules] that takes them from the Championship losses into the Premier League, so they won’t have that wide a margin to spend.”

“Look at the quality of Newcastle. When we get into the reality of the game itself. It will be a great spectacle for the North East, but Newcastle are up, up and away. They are a different beast than maybe the last time Sunderland ever played them. It will be a great spectacle.”

The derbies could be extremely one-sided if they return to the Premier League next season

To be honest, though, we've always felt our squad was superior to theirs, even every time they won during that run of six in a row that they are still dining out on ten years later.

Form, quality, all of that goes out of the window when it's a derby. It all boils down to passion, desire, intent and survival when things inevitably boil over.

That being said, we are light years ahead of where they are and winning against them should be so routine it's laughable. I mean, Derby's record low points total is at severe risk if they come up.
