Newcastle United's chances of signing Yoane Wissa took a huge hit this week when the 28-year-old returned to training with Brentford after previously having gone on strike.

In his pre-match press conference, Bees boss Keith Andrews confirmed that Wissa was back training with the first team and was in contention to return to the side at the weekend.

Saturday came around, and Yoane Wissa's name was nowhere near the Brentford team sheet, which has once again stoked the fires that his move to Newcastle United could still happen.

Yoane Wissa had told Brentford he wasn't going to play for them again and even deleted all things Brentford from his Instagram account in a nuclear move.

Yoane Wissa didn't even make the bench for Brentford on Saturday

When he returned to training after Keith Andrews made it clear to the media that the club's stance is that Wissa is not for sale, it looked as though Newcastle would have to look elsewhere.

Craig Hope had suggested that Newcastle had set Brentford a deadline of Friday to give the Magpies a definitive answer on whether or not Wissa would be available.

While Hope has not followed that claim up with anything on Saturday, the fact that Wissa didn't even make he bench for Brentford on Saturday as they beat Aston Villa 1-0 thanks to a goal from new boy Dango Ouattara has kept hopes alive for the Magpies.

Newcastle have a couple of alternative options

Plenty of reports have suggested that Newcastle now have other targets in mind in the form of Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves, who didn't have the best of games against Bournemouth today, and Alexander Sorloth from Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle have just over a week to get a striker in for the upcoming season.

We will see once again on Monday just how desperate we are for a new centre forward when Liverpool comes to St James' Park, with Anthony Gordon likely to be the one leading the line.
