Newcastle United are desperate to sign a striker this summer and they have one more than willing to come to Tyneside, but his club are doing all it can to stop that from happening.

Brentford have rejected a bid of £40 million from Newcastle for Yoane Wissa, insisting that they want £60 million, which is £10 million more than they wanted at the start of the window.

The whole thing has shades of Crystal Palace last year when Newcastle were trying to sign Marc Guehi and Steve Parish kept moving the goalposts.

The difference here is that Yoane Wissa wants the move and is doing all he can to force the issue. He left their pre-season training camp, trained away from the first team and even removed Brentford from his personal Instagram. Now, things could go to another level as TBR Football reports that his team are considering legal action.

Yoane Wissa's team are bringing in the lawyers

Yoane Wissa and his team are adamant that promises were made last summer that, should an offer of over £30 million come in this year, he'd be allowed to leave, but Newcastle have twice made offers over that amount and both have been rejected, which Graeme Bailey says could lead to a legal challenge.

“I think we are beyond the point of saying this is getting messy. I am told Wissa’s people are exploring every avenue, and that includes possible legal options.

“Wissa is committed to leaving Brentford and joining Newcastle – he is desperate to be a Newcastle player by the end of this month.

“There is still more than a week of the window left, and Wissa remains hopeful that he will be in black and white before it slams shut.”

Verbal contracts are a waste of time and effort

As we have been saying about Alexander Isak, a verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on. If there was some sort of gentleman's agreement, it's still always wise to have it written down somewhere.

Brentford are denying that any such agreement existed, and why wouldn't they? There's no paper trail; it's their word against his.

We absolutely hate the way both Wissa and Isak have gone about things this summer, but Newcastle are pretty much out of options. If Wissa does join after all of this, we expect he digs deep and gives us everything he's got plus more to justify this behaviour.
