Yoane Wissa achieved something last night that hasn't been done in the Champions League for 23 years
Yoane Wissa had arguably his best game for Newcastle United so far last night as the Magpies beat PSV 3-0 in the Champions League.
The 29-year-old got himself on the scoresheet and provided an assist for Anthony Gordon's goal and was a constant threat all night.
There's an argument to be made that Wissa was denied a penalty in the second half, too, although it seems I'm in the minority on that one.
Wissa was rightly handed the Player of the Match trophy at the end of the game, but Wissa's goal broke a 23-year long drought of Congolese players scoring in the Champions League; the last one to do so was also playing for Newcastle United.
The last DR Congo player to score in the Champions League also played for Newcastle United
As LiveScore posted on X last night, the last DR Congo player to score in the Champions League was Lomana Lua-Lua when he was at Newcastle United.
The enigmatic forward with the iconic acrobatic celebration scored (and assisted) in a 3-1 win away at Bayer Leverkusen in February 2003.
Shola Ameobi bagged a brace in that game too under the stewardship of Sir Bobby Robson.
Champions League football was a huge reason Wissa wanted the move to Newcastle
A big motivation for Yoane Wissa's move to Newcastle in the summer was that he wanted to play in the Champions League, and he knew that this could be his last chance to do so.
It has only been one game, but we think the competition suits him so far.
Hopefully, it's the first of many for the Congolese striker.
