Despite already having a bid rejected, the indications seem to be that Newcastle United might still prevail in their hunt for a new defender with Wolverhampton Wanderers preparing for an exit.

Over the weekend it was reported that Newcastle had proposed a player plus cash deal to take 27-year-old centre-back Max Kilman from Wolves with Elliot Anderson suggested as the player the Magpies were set to exchange.

Fortunately for fans of Anderson and by all accounts, the player himself, that bid was rejected.

That came after Wolves had already rebuffed a £30million offer from West Ham a couple of days earlier.

Wolves want £40million for Max Kilman

However, now GiveMeSport are reporting that Wolves are shopping for new defenders already, which suggests they could be preparing for Kilman's departure.

Newcastle will now likely have a sense of what it will take for Wolves to part with Kilman and may well return with a bid closer to their £40million valuation.

Eddie Howe is still looking for another centre-back to come in alongside Lloyd Kelly after missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo.

Newcastle fans need to start to accept reality

£40million seems a bit high to us, but we're sure time will tell. It happens all the time when a player makes a move to another club and they take their game up a level, so there's nothing to say that Eddie Howe can't with Max Kilman what he's done with so many other Newcastle players.

We'd prefer Fikayo Tomori, but we're also realistic and know that our chances of that one happening are slim. We've come a long way in two and a half years, but we're still way off the top sides and that's the harsh reality that's becoming apparent as we try to lure big players to St James' Park. We will get there, as long as the Premier League stop interfering by bringing in ridiculous restrictions.

Kilman wouldn't be a bad acquisition by any means, but he's not going to do much to blow away that dark cloud that is starting to cover the NUFC corner of social media.
