Newcastle United have made a breakthrough in the transfer market after a baren month of zero activity.

Keith Downie took to X last night to confirm that Newcastle have signed Sheffield United striker Will Osula in a £15 million deal (£10m + £5m in add-ons).

It's not the transfer that has most Geordies talking, that one being the proposed move for Marc Guehi, but Osula is still a solid addition, albeit one more for the future than the here and now.

The 21-year-old Dane comes from Sheffield United where he made 21 Premier League appearances last season without finding the net.

Osula was pretty much thrown in the deep end last season

While that stat does sound like a cause for concern, it's worth noting that he only started nine of those 21 games and of those nine, he only played the full 90 minutes once.

His total minutes was just 784 which is equivalent to just under nine games. It's also worth mentioning that of those nine games he started, most were against top six opposition.

Keith Downie also spoke about about Osula on his YouTube channel saying that one of his colleagues who watched a lot of Sheff United last season has said he's probably not ready for the Premier League just yet but his exploits in pre-season suggest he's been working hard.

Osula could be a good impact sub this season

If we're being honest, he's only really been brought in to warm the bench when Callum Wilson is injured. He may get a few runs out throughout the season as an impact sub.

With Eddie Howe in his corner though, we expect he'll develop into a good first-team player. You only have to look at what Howe's done with Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall to know that.

We're awaiting official confirmation from the club and his first interview, but we suspect we'll not have to wait too long for that now.
