What Graeme Jones did under lights at St James' Park after 4-1 Carabao Cup win over Bradford
As Newcastle United supporters headed home after witnessing the Magpies book their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, a bunch of the squad were back out on the pitch under the lights at St James' Park.
Newcastle's fixture schedule has been pretty cramped of late, with midweek games last week, this week and again next week, meaning Eddie Howe's time to have all his players in for training has been limited.
Having played last night, today (Thursday) has been a rest day for the team, who return to Darsley Park on Friday to prepare for Arsenal's visit on Sunday.
However, those players who didn't start the game last night didn't get to go home and get tucked up in bed to prepare for their day off before being put through their paces again.
As seen in the background of Craig Hope's YouTube video following the 4-1 over Bradford, Graeme Jones had a group of players out on the pitch running drills before they went home.
Confirmed again in Craig Hope's Newcastle Confidential column for the Daily Mail, it wasn't just a case of doing a warm-down.
"Confidential can reveal that coach Graeme Jones led a session in the hour after full-time against Bradford on Wednesday and it involved senior stars such as Tonali, Nick Woltemade, Trippier and Harvey Barnes, all of whom started on the bench with all but the Italian coming on after the hour mark.
"It was not just the usual running drill, but a specially laid on session in front of several coaches. The squad then had a recovery day on Thursday before resuming on Friday preparations for Sunday’s visit of Arsenal.
You don't get to be the best by slacking off, I suppose.
Arsenal is a huge game on Sunday, and the likes of Sandro Tonali and Nick Woltemade will be key in that battle, so it makes sense that they get put through a bit of extra training after sitting out against Bradford.
Woltemade, Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes did appear off the bench on Wednesday, but it seems if you didn't start the game, you got back out there and did more work.
