Fabian Schar was inches away from knocking Sandro Tonali's mid-week effort out of the favourite spot for Goal of the Season.

After Sandro Tonali's wondergoal from a tight angle against Brentford last week, Fabian Schar obviously said "Hold my Moretti" as he tried the cheekiest of attempts during Newcastle United's 3-0 win away at Leicester City.

From 55 yards out, Fabi saw Leicester 'keeper, Mads Hermansen way off his line, with Murphy making a great run between the Leicester back line, Schar opted to ping a shot which looked to be inch perfect.

Unfortunately for Schar, the ball cannoned back off the crossbar, but luckily, Jacob Murphy had continued his run and was able to follow up and apply the finish.

Jacob Murphy almost made a mess of the gift bestowed by Fabian Schar

Murphy admitted after the game that he was caught in two minds whether to control the ball or hit it first time which resulted in a bit of mis-control before he eventually tucked it beyond Hermansen.

I'm sure even Murphy would have loved to have seen Schar's effort dip under the bar, but it wasn't meant to be.

While Murphy celebrated, admitting that his heart was fluttering thinking he was going to screw it up, Schar apparently had something else on his mind.

Fabian Schar wanted to make sure Murphy was kept honest

You could see Fabian Schar saying something to Murphy as the team celebrated with the former Swiss international seemingly questioning Murphy's timing.

"You weren't offside were you there?"

That would have been the ultimate kick in the teeth to have it ruled out for offside. Although, given how Patson Daka hit both posts before the ball rolled safely into the hands of Nick Pope only to then see the offside flag, the luck was certainly fully against them last night, and all on our side.
