Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are currently down under preparing to play two friendly matches in Australia this week.

Both sides have an Aussie connection with Newcastle having Australian wonderkid Garang Kuol on their books and Tottenham being managed by Australian Ange Postecoglou.

Ange got off to a great start at Tottenham after joining from Celtic in the summer but even he couldn't shake the Spursy ways out of the club and they tailed off massively at the end of the season, as is tradition.

However, were it not for Eddie Howe, Postecoglou may never have got the chance to manage in the Premier League at all.

Ange "owes" Eddie his career

Ange Postecoglou got the Celtic job in 2021 and went on to win five trophies, including a domestic treble with the Hoops, but he almost never got the gig.

Eddie Howe was poised to take over at Celtic Park but decided against the job in the end, later ending up at Newcastle while Postecoglou's success at Celtic caught the eye of Tottenham.

Ange has acknowledged this sliding doors moment in the past jokingly saying he owes his career to Eddie Howe.

Speaking to the media in Australia last night, the subject was brought up to Eddie Howe who admitted the pair had never actually spoken of it but is happy with how things worked out. (via Football Scotland)

"We’ve never discussed that. It’s always that kind of thing when you’re a manager and you’re looking at your next opportunity.

"I’ve had it myself where maybe certain things have happened, you think you’re going to miss out on a job, and then you get an opportunity that you don’t expect. It can change your life dramatically, and it can change your career. That has certainly happened for me here at Newcastle."
