West Ham could launch desperate bid to land Newcastle United veteran linked with move to Turkey
Things have been very quiet on the transfer front for Newcastle United, both in terms of incomings and outgoings, so far this January, but that could be about to change.
Eddie Howe hasn't ruled out a foray into the transfer market to try and patch up his broken defence, while there also seems to be a question over whether the Magpies need another midfielder to add to their ranks.
Just as important is incomings this month are some outgoings. Newcastle have a few players whose contracts are due to expire in the summer, and there's no guarantee of an extension.
That means this month will be our last chance to bring in some money for their services rather than lose them for free in the off-season.
West Ham want Jamaal Lascelles
Jamaal Lascelles is out of contract this summer, and the invisible man is unlikely to be offered a new deal. Finding a new home for the club captain this month makes sense.
The 32-year-old has been linked with a move to Turkey lately, but now Premier League strugglers West Ham are thought to be considering a desperate bid, according to Claret & Hugh.
Judging by the report in Claret & Hugh, it's not a move that particularly excites the Hammers fans, but in fairness, if he can get fit, he could be just what the Hammers need in terms of someone with a big voice who can go in and pick up a failing squad.
Jamaal Lascelles is a leader, and that's what West Ham needs right now
There are those who would say that Lascelles has been stealing a living at Newcastle since he made himself a prime candidate for the captaincy after calling out our squad on TV during the dark days.
The former Nottingham Forest man has never really been a regular feature in the back line under Eddie Howe; instead has been used only when options were limited. There have been times when he has looked rock solid; it's clear that he's been kept around more for his influence in the dressing room than on the pitch.
It's that kind of influence that West Ham needs right now, so they may not be excited by the prospect, but it could be a good move if it comes off.
