'We're still actively looking': Eddie Howe gives update on Newcastle United's search for new centre-forward

Newcastle United went into the summer transfer window knowing they needed a new centre forward with Callum Wilson leaving the club.

Some would argue that we needed a new striker even if Wilson had signed a contract extension, as it was an area of the pitch where the Magpies were dangerously thin.

Now, it's clear that Eddie Howe needs to find two strikers to come in as Alexander Isak has gone on strike to force a move away from St James' Park.

Unfortunately, signing strikers is one of the hardest things to do as they are always such hot commodities, and with PSR holding the club back from being able to match the 'Big Six' for transfer fees and wages, it has been a nightmare for Newcastle.

Goncalo Ramos will stay with PSG amid links to Newcastle

Eddie Howe confirmed Newcastle are still active in the market

It now looks as though there will be immediate movement on Yoane Wissa, as Bournemouth have found a replacement for Dango Ouattara, which allows him to move to Brentford and the Bees to sanction the move for Wissa.

However, when it comes to finding someone capable of replacing Alexander Isak, things aren't going to be easy, especially with time running out, but Eddie Howe told reporters this morning that the club are still trying.

"We are still active in the window. We want to add one or two more players. Quality over quantity. We don't want to do too much more.

"We are strong in certain areas of the squad.
It's a small field. The centre-forward market this year is as tight as I've ever known it. But we're still actively looking, and I think there is someone there to meet our requirements."

Goncalo Ramos ruled himself out of a move away from PSG in midweek

We know it's like trying to get blood from a stone, getting details out of Eddie Howe, so it was no surprise that no names were mentioned. It's almost as if Eddie Howe has respect for other clubs and their players.

Another potential target took themselves off the board in midweek after Goncalo Ramos helped PSG to beat Tottenham in the Super League. He declared his intention to stay with the French Champions.

There are still some good options out there, but time is absolutely not on Newcastle's side. Let's keep everything crossed that Steve Nickson and Andy Howe are energised and ready to attack.
