It's Transfer Deadline Day and Newcastle United are in talks over a new player - what reality are we living in?

Granted, there's no pressure on Newcastle today as even though this mini-window closes at 7pm tonight, the main summer window will open in six days' time when the Club World Cup is completed and the Magpies can get their business done then.

However, as we've not had any excitement on a deadline day for so long, let's get carried away.

Sky Sports is breaking news now (10:45 am Wednesday 10th June) that Newcastle are in negotiations with Burnley over a fee for goalkeeper James Trafford.

Sky Sports are reporting that talks are taking place between Newcastle and Burnley

It's a deal that has been bubbling away in the background for over a year, as 22-year-old England keeper James Trafford came close to agreeing a move to Newcastle last summer.

For one reason or another, that deal fell apart, and while Trafford admits to sulking a bit afterwards, the young 'keeper got on with life at Burnley and went on to have an amazing season with the Clarets, keeping 26 clean sheets as they regained their Premier League status.

However, that stellar season and Burnley's new top-flight status have provided a wrinkle for Newcastle, who will now have to pay more than the £20 million they almost secured Trafford for last season.

Newcastle will have to pay around £30 million to seal the deal for Trafford

Sky Sports is now claiming that the clubs are in talks for a deal expected to be worth closer to £30 million, while stating Newcastle's need to negotiate a good deal due to PSR.

We're huge fans of James Trafford at the FEED, but we're hardly bouncing around the office with excitement. We're happy that talks are underway for sure, and we're confident of a positive outcome, but this one just felt inevitable.

We don't expect much progress to be made today. That's not Newcastle's style. We'll have to wait until the Summer Transfer Window Part 2 before we see any incomings.
