Newcastle United were hard done by, to say the least, last night, as the Slovenian referee made a string of errors that benefitted Paris Saint-Germain.

As is our right to do so, we've made a few jokes about the referee being on the take, and while we'd like to believe they're just jokes, the sheer number of errors that went against us would suggest probable cause.

The key incidents last night were the penalty decisions for handball. Lewis Miley accidentally handled the ball in the area (after Bradley Barcola had done the same thing), and the VAR played the clip over and over again for the referee to view, showing just enough to make the action look deliberate and the penalty was awarded.

Later in the half, the ball clearly struck Marquinhos on the arm when defending a corner and nothing was given, and VAR barely gave it a second look. Unsurprisingly, this upset the Newcastle players and Jason Tindall, with captain Dan Burn and Tindall confronting the referee in the tunnel.

Dan Burn says both incidents were exactly the same

TNT Sports covered the discussion but talked over the top of it, so we couldn't hear what was said, but now a video has appeared online where you can hear what Dan Burn was saying to the Slovenian.

"It's exactly the same. We concede a penalty, they concede a penalty."

Jason Tindall echoes the same sentiment.

Make it make sense

Again, for the record, we don't believe Marquinhos' handball should have been given as a penalty, for us it was similar to the one that Newcastle were punished for two years ago in that there was nothing he could have done about it.

But the same goes for Lewis Miley; he was just done by the forward motion of his arm because he was running and the referee interpreted it as a deliberate attempt to play the ball.

UEFA's handball rules are different to those in the Premier League, but if Miley's was a penalty, then so too was Marquinhos', so Dan Burn and Jason Tindall had every right to demand an explanation.
