Newcastle United's Under 21s were up against League One Mansfield Town in the Vertu Trophy last night, keeping their qualification dreams alive.

The Magpies must beat Harrogate Town in their next game while hoping Mansfield can do them a favour by beating Huddersfield Town for the stiffs to progress to the knockout stages of the competition, but for now, it's all about that victory last night.

The game finished 2-2 after Newcastle took an early lead via Cathal Heffernan, but two Mansfield Town goals either side of half-time put the Magpies in danger of defeat.

However, a simply stunning ball from Park Seung-soo set up Charlie McArthur to blast home late in the game and sending the game to penalties.

Charlie McArthur says the lads dug deep to secure the win

Speaking to Newcastle's official site after the game, Charlie McArthur praised the spirit of the lads to get the goal back to take it to penalties.

"I think we deserved it. In the second-half, we came into the game and showed the kind of team we are. We were playing well, especially against a good side in League One, backed ourselves from the start and ended up getting a decent result.

"Going one-nil up settled the nerves and helped us to build from there. We stuck in for the first-half and we did well to go into the break level and we played well in the second-half.

"The boys dug deep. We conceded from a silly set play, which we could have done better with, but we showed the character to come back and showed the quality we have in the team."

What a talent we've found in Park Seung-soo

While McArthur gets the praise for restoring parity and taking the game to penalties, all the talk today has been about Park Seung-soo's sublime assist, curling the ball with the outside of his foot into the path of McArthur.

The Korean wonderkid has continued to impress after his brief cameos turned heads during the club's tour of Asia in pre-season.

We may not have to wait too long to see Park as a regular feature in Eddie Howe's first-team squad.
