Newcastle United had the unpleasant honour of being the side that consigned Ipswich Town to relegation from the Premier League on Saturday.

Ipswich came to St James' Park needing a miracle to avoid having their relegation confirmed, requiring a win against a high-flying Newcastle while hoping that Brighton would take all three points against West Ham.

Brighton did their part, but Ipswich, despite defending like beavers, simply couldn't hold on after Michael Salisbury gave Ben Johnson his marching orders on 37 minutes.

Newcastle finally had a breakthrough when VAR and an on-field review awarded a penalty to the Magpies, and that allowed Newcastle to relax and take the game to Ipswich without any fear, or real urgency, ultimately coming away with a 3-0 win.

Newcastle United fans applauded the Ipswich Town fans after the game

Newcastle fans still remember the pain of relegation from 2009 and 2016 in the Mike Ashley years. We also still remember the absolutely classless behaviour from the Aston Villa fans in 2009 when they were the team that ultimately sent us down.

The Villa fans held up a banner with the words 'Sob On The Tyne' among others poking fun at our demise, and that's probably a big reason why there seems to be so much animosity between the two fanbases to this day.

Thankfully, Newcastle fans were much more classy yesterday, applauding the Ipswich fans in the stadium at full time, and continuing to do so as their fans filtered out of the stadium.

We wish Ipswich Town the best of luck next season and hope for a swift return to the Premier League

The two clubs obviously have the Sir Bobby Robson connection that keeps them quite friendly, with both sets of fans singing Robson Wonderland during the game yesterday.

Both sets of fans were shaking hands and wishing each other well for the next season, and we genuinely hope that Ipswich can make a return to the Premier League sooner rather than later.

I know yesterday I made a joke about not knowing any of their players other than Liam Delap, but Ipswich do have some talented players in their squad, and if they can keep hold of most of their big players, we see no reason why they won't be back after next season.
