Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak thought he'd scored his fifth goal in as many games on Tuesday night but his goal was chalked off for offside.
Alexander Isak had scored against Chelsea, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Slovakia heading into the Nations League game against Azerbaijan, and while Sweden came away with a convincing 6-0 win, the Swedes were left raging after a ridiculous decision.
The Newcastle forward was adjudged to have been offside when the ball was played ... to Viktor Gyokeres. Gyokeres received the ball in his own half before playing in Isak who was clearly onside when the ball was played - he went on to find the back of the net but VAR called it back and ruled out the goal.
After the game, Isak was furious, telling reporters (via The Mirror) that it was the worst VAR decision ever - a sentiment echoed by many people.
Despite such a convincing win, the Swede, who also missed a penalty, couldn't hide his anger.
"Seriously, It's almost the worst I've seen. I'm happy, of course, that we win, but when I score a goal that should be allowed, then it's clear that you get annoyed.
"I don't think I've ever experienced anything like this at this level when I've been involved.
“You've seen a lot of mistakes, but this one was pretty rough. The VAR referees stood in the player tunnel at halftime.
"We argued with them, but they stuck to their decision that they had made the right call."
It's mind-boggling that the Polish officials had the gall to stand there and tell Isak that they made the right decision.
Poland's PZPN Referees' Board clearly didn't agree, and Polish outlet TVP has now reported that both VAR officials, Daniel Stefanski and Pawel Malec, have now been suspended.
It doesn't change things, but it must be satisfying for Alexander Isak to know that he has been vindicated.
