Turkish media are now reporting that Newcastle and Crystal Palace could go head to head for defender

Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are locked in talks over the sale of Marc Guehi with Palace seemingly now demanding £70 million for the 24-year-old.

After Fabian Schar picked up a straight red card in the opening-day game against Southampton yesterday, Eddie Howe will be missing the Swiss international for three games meaning there's a new sense of urgency being injected into the club's search for a new centre-back.

Guehi it still the priority for Newcastle, but will all of Crystal Palace's posturing, it makes sense that the club has a back-up plan or two.

Ironically, the latest player to be linked with the club is also wanted by Crystal Palace meaning that the two clubs could go head-to-head now for the same player.

Newcastle and Palace are eyeing 23-year-old Jayden Oosterwolde

Turkish outlet Aslinda are claiming that both clubs are keen on Fenerbahce defender Jayden Oosterwolde.

The 23-year-old Dutchman has had several admirers from the Premier League this summer but remains a Fenerbahce player for now.

It's rumoured that the bidding could start at €25 million (£21 million) which makes him a much more cost-effective alternative to Guehi.

Any move for Jayden Oosterwolde seems dependent on Marc Guehi's move

Given that the story originates from Turkey, we are taking this with a huge pinch of salt.

Also, if there is genuine interest there from Newcastle and Palace, the side that ends up with Marc Guehi will very likely not make an approach with Oosterwolde being the backup option for either club.

We still aren't sure who Newcastle's alternative will be if the deal for Guehi falls apart, but Oosterwolde sounds like a long shot.
