Troy Deeney selects two Newcastle United players in his Team of the Week
Newcastle United beat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday at St James' Park, a feat that was last achieved when Rafa Benitez was at the helm.
It was far from a smash-and-grab job by the Magpies, who looked good value for their win, though that's not to say it was a battering by any means. City had their chances, but poor finishing ultimately cost them in the end.
Newcastle were also guilty of missing some big chances, with Nick Woltemade finding an inspired Gianluigi Donnarumma and Harvey Barnes missing an open goal.
Thankfully, Barnes didn't let that miss affect his game, and he made up for it in the second half by scoring two goals in under 10 minutes, either side of a Ruben Dias equaliser.
Harvey Barnes bagged a brace for Newcastle on Saturday
It's probably no surprise then that Barnes was selected by Troy Deeney in his Premier League Team of the Week for the BBC.
Harvey Barnes (Newcastle): A really interesting player. He plays well, usually better off the bench, but Anthony Gordon has an injury so he has to play. He missed a huge chance against Manchester City at 0-0 with his easiest shot. But to have the mental fortitude to put himself in difficult situations and score twice was great.
It wasn't just Barnes from Newcastle who was chosen by the former Watford striker.
Malick Thiaw was fully deserving of his spot in the BBC TotW
Malick Thiaw had a phenomenal game for Newcastle, keeping Erling Haaland at bay for 90 minutes and was rightfully given a spot in Deeney's Team of the Week.
Malick Thiaw (Newcastle): I watched him a few times last year in Italy for AC Milan and he was getting killled because he was making mistakes. But at Newcastle he's been a monster. He's been really strong and powerful and looks elegant. It looks like he's found a spiritual home.
We are absolutely stunned that Malick Thiaw isn't in the WhoScored? Team of the Week, indeed, Newcastle are not represented at all. Shocking.
