Newcastle United are closing in on making a decision on what is to happen to St James' Park as the PIF looks increasingly likely to build a new stadium rather than renovate.
When the talks kicked off about the idea of moving to a new purpose-built stadium, it was met with resistance from Newcastle United fans who couldn't bide the idea of leaving St James' Park, but as drips and drabs of information have been leaked with regards to what the new stadium could be, fans have begun to warm to the idea.
A big part of what makes St James' Park so iconic is its city-centre location. The 'Cathedral on the Hill' dominates the Newcastle skyline and cuts an imposing figure as travelling supporters enter the city.
Thankfully, the plan to build a new stadium would aim to do so on Leazes Park, the land adjacent to the current stadium, meaning it would keep it city-centre, imposing position. In fact, a new stadium would be even bigger and therefore more imposing.
The Newcastle United board were shown a video of the latest proposal, which is for the new ground to be built further into Leazes Park than first expected. The latest plans won't have the new stadium intersect the current footprint, allowing St James' Park to remain open during construction, removing the need for a groundshare.
The Guardian has reported that it's expected that the build of a new 65,000-capacity stadium, which would make it the second biggest club ground in the country behind Manchester United, will take around seven years to complete.
Brad Miller is leading the project, and he told the Fan Advisory Board members at a recent meeting a new stadium, which will also have more corporate hospitality and more leisure facilities, could double Newcastle’s match-day revenue.
Newcastle could face some trouble acquiring permission to go ahead with the new build as the land they plan to build on is subject to a conservation order making planning permission a huge obstacle.
The club does plan to build parkland alongside the stadium in a bid to replace the green space that will be taken up by the project.
We're clearly still a way away from being told anything concrete, but things are certainly moving forward.
