Newcastle United bounced back from a trio of defeats with a 3-0 win over 10-man Fulham at St James' Park.

This was exactly what Newcastle needed after a tough couple of weeks, although it wasn't all sunshine and lollipops for Eddie Howe as he saw two players limp off the field injured.

Fulham were up for the game coming into the fixture in superb form with 10 goals in two games, but Newcastle stuck to their task and managed to keep the London side at bay.

A superb win was marred by two more injuries

Newcastle lost Fabian Schar early on after the Swiss made the starting lineup despite pre-match talk of him being unavailable. It seems it might have been better if he had sat it out after pulling up with an apparent hamstring injury after just 11 minutes.

Ten minutes after losing Schar to injury, Fulham lost Raul Jiminez to a red card. Initially, he was shown a yellow after clattering into Sean Longstaff with a reckless jump, but despite the fact that he did clearly try to pull out of the challenge, it was deemed dangerous play after a VAR check, the yellow was rescinded a straight red shown instead.

To be fair to Fulham, for a spell after that, it was they who looked like they had the man advantage as Newcastle once again seemed to struggle against a side with 10 men.

Adding insult to injury, or injury to insult to be more specific, Eddie Howe was forced to bring off Joelinton on 35 minutes as the second injury of the afternoon threatened to dull Newcastle's spirit. Fortunately for Newcastle, though, Joelinton was replaced by Lewis Miley and while the Magpies practically limped over the line until half-time, they came out refreshed and ready.

We could not be buzzing any more for Lewis Miley right now

It was substitute Lewis Miley who got the scoring underway with a superbly taken finish, his first goal for the club and it lifted the roof off St James' Park.

That 57th-minute goal was soon followed up by a tap-in on the line for Miguel Almiron fresh off us saying how fed up of him we are, as is the tradition, and then Big Dan Burn got in on the act after bungling home of his knee after seeing his initial header saved by Bernd Leno.

However, besides Miley's goal, the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for when Sven Botman entered the fray on 84 minutes. It was Botman's first appearance in 17 games and he came on to a rapturous reception.

If we were to nitpick, we should have made more of our chances and come away with a much bigger win, but three points was what mattered today and to add a clean sheet on top of a Lewis Miley goal, that's not a bad day's work.

Now we just have to hope that Joelinton and Fabian Schar are okay.
