Newcastle United made a last-minute desperate bid to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest on deadline day that was ultimately rejected.
By this point, Newcastle had walked away from the negotiations for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi and were making a big push to try to not end the day empty-handed.
However, Forest had already made it clear to Newcastle earlier in the window that they didn't want to part with the Swedish winger who tore Dan Burn a new one last season.
Alexander Isak spoke to Anthony Elanga about the failed move while on international duty with Sweden and it seems that Elanga hasn't closed the door on a move to Tyneside.
Elanga spoke to Fotboll Skanalen in Sweden (via Newcastle World) and said that he believes he must be doing something right if Newcastle are keen on his services.
“The environment in Nottingham is good. It is clear that you can see that Newcastle are interested, it means that I am playing good football when a big club shows interest.
“But Nottingham is also a big club, they have won two Champions Leagues, even though it was before I was born. But I’m happy in Nottingham and have a contract there.”
It seems that he told Isak pretty much the same thing, but he did also hint that there's a chance he could join Newcastle in the future.
“Isak talked to me about it. But I said the same to him as I say to you. We have a good relationship and good chemistry when we play together. But I have a contract with Nottingham. I’m focusing on Nottingham and hope to have a good season, then we’ll see what happens.”
Having someone on the wing who has played with Isak and knows his game well would be a huge advantage for Newcastle, but it seems like getting Elanga away from Nottingham Forest may be easier said than done.
