The two positions Eddie Howe could target to reinforce in January in bid to improve Newcastle United's results
Newcastle United's Premier League season isn't going according to plan, if we're being polite about things. Everything else is going great, we're amongst the big boys in the Champions League, we're in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup again, it's just in the league where results haven't gone our way.
Every man and his dog has his own theory on why and their own ideas of what needs to be done to sort it out, but it's all on Eddie Howe in the end, with some help from his team, obviously.
There's a strong feeling in and around the club that a new formation and tactical setup would go a long way to improving Newcastle's Premier League fortunes.
Then, of course, there's throwing money at the problem with the January transfer window getting ever nearer.
Newcastle have two positions they may look to strengthen this winter
We doubt that will be the approach the club will take, but The Athletic has claimed that two positions could be looked at to reinforce in January should the club decide to dip into the winter market.
A full-back and a midfielder are thought to be on the list, and this does follow with all the transfer rumours, both incoming and outgoing.
Emil Krafth is being tipped to leave, and he will need to be replaced. We also could do with more back-up for Lewis Hall rather than using Dan Burn, and in the midfield, Joelinton hasn't been firing on all cylinders this season, while Jacob Ramsey hasn't yet done enough to suggest to Howe that he's the long-term future.
We could see a new full-back coming in in January
We feel that a midfielder in January would be a stretch. The inflated January market would make finding a suitable midfielder very difficult, and it would also seem a bit too soon to overreact to Jacob Ramsey's failure to displace Joelinton.
However, a full-back could happen and probably should happen. Especially if we do allow Emil Krafth to leave.
Ideally, though, by the time January comes around, we'll have got our form back under control and any purchases will just be seen as strengthening rather than a necessary change.
