'That's not normal': Nick Woltemade says what surprised him about Newcastle United fans in the last week
Newcastle United threw away another lead in the Premier League on Saturday, coming away with a 2-2 draw against Chelsea after taking a two-goal lead in the first half.
Nick Woltemade got his name on the scoresheet twice in the first half for the Magpies and really should have added a third at the end of the half, but the big German's attempt somehow went wide of the post.
After scoring the only goal in the Wear-Tyne derby last weekend ... at the wrong end of the pitch ... Woltemade was determined to give back to the fans after breaking their hearts last weekend.
Woltemade's derby goal was a freak accident, although had it been at the other end, it would have gone down as an amazing finish.
Nick Woltemade thanked the fans for their support
A good sign of how much Nick Woltemade has captured the hearts of the Geordie Nation is what he told NUFC TV in his post-match interview yesterday, that most of the messages he got from fans after the derby were positive.
"Yeah, I'm I was really good, to be honest, when I saw how the fans reacted when I came into the game or even the messages I got. I felt really good, and I'm really happy that I play in a club like this. I think that's what I wanted to give today back to the fans, and yeah, I just can say thank you to everyone who who text me. I just got maybe 95% just good messages, and I think that's not normal.
"If you score on goal in a derby and lose the game. But uh yeah, I'm really happy and really thankful to play for the club.
"I think when I came in on on Wednesday on the pitch, the whole crowd was singing my name and yeah, this is not normal and I'm really happy to play in a club like this who gave me a good feeling. I think that's why I played today also good because I knew the fans are behind me, the fans gave me the confidence and, yeah, I'm really happy."
Woltemade showed he could be a poacher
It was ironic that on Wednesday, we were saying how much Newcastle had missed a real poacher in front of goal after seeing Yoane Wissa's instinctive finish and then on Saturday, Nick Woltemade scores two goals from being in the right place at the right time.
It seems that Big Nick is already benefiting from having competition for his place. We remember how Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak were always better when the other was actually fit and competing for a place in the starting lineup.
For us, though, the ultimate goal is seeing Woltemade and Wissa playing together with Woltemade behind Wissa. We think that would work brilliantly, but of course it means Eddie Howe would have to scrap the 4-3-3 and we're not sure he'd do that just yet.
