There aren't many positions Newcastle United couldn't do with strengthening ahead of a season with European football on the agenda.

Newcastle's squad is wafer-thin, and it just takes an injury to one big star to massively change the dynamic. The starting XI is fairly solid, albeit with an ageing defence, but beyond a couple of options on the bench, there's a serious lack of quality there.

However, there's one position that Newcastle have covered right now is left wing, with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes both outstanding options down that left flank.

Which makes Ian Wright's claim that Newcastle United should sign Marcus Rashford a little bit baffling.

Ian Wright says Newcastle United should sign Marcus Rashford

Speaking on the Ringer FC podcast, Ian Wright suggested Newcastle should try and beat Aston Villa to the signing of Rashford this summer, despite the Midlands club having a £40 million option to buy in their loan agreement with Manchester United.

“It’s the kind of signing Newcastle should be making.

“That would be amazing. That would be dangerous. Rashford at Newcastle? Yeah. That would be really good. I really like that for Rashford. Rashford at Newcastle can be dangerous.”

We've got to disagree with you here, Wrighty

Marcus Rashford is starting to remind us of the player he used to be at Manchester United before everything started to fall apart for the forward.

The 27-year-old has found a new lease of life at Aston Villa, and while there's clearly still a player in there, and his versatility would be a huge boost for Newcastle's squad, we just can't shake the last couple of years from our memory.

Villa got it right securing a loan move, and after all he's done for them, if they don't snap him up for the agreed £40 million, then that surely has to be a red flag and Newcastle should stay well away.
