Newcastle United's proposed £40million transfer of Dominic Calvert-Lewin has clearly been a hot topic of discussion on TalkSPORT today.
Following from Tony Cascarino's comments this morning in which he believed he'd be a great signing for Newcastle, Simon Jordan has now taken the opposite stance on the matter speaking on his show with Jim White this afternoon.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was said to be one half of a 'mutually beneficial' swap deal between Everton and Newcastle which would have seen promising teenager Yankuba Minteh go the other way for a similar fee of around £40million. All in a bid to avoid points deductions next season with both clubs struggling to come under the allowed losses for the three-year PSR rolling period which ends on Sunday.
Newcastle fans were less than enthused about this deal to begin with with a large portion of the Toon Army unconvinced by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and just as many unsure if letting Minteh go before he's even had a chance to prove himself is a wise move either.
It's still highly likely that Minteh will be sold before Sunday's PSR deadline as he's about the only player we have that is generating any strong interest right now, but as for whether that comes as part of a resurrected swap deal with Everton for Calvert-Lewin remains to be seen. Our feeling is the closer we get to that deadline without raising funds, the more likely both clubs reach a compromise on that proposed deal.
However, Simon Jordan said on TalkSPORT (h/t HITC) this afternoon that he doesn't see the sense in the move from Newcastle's point of view.
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a decent player. He had a decent season a while ago. If you can get £40 million for him, that would be fantastic.
“If I was in (Sean) Dyche’s shoes, I would want to sell him and his handbag!
“The reality of it is that I just don’t see him going to Newcastle. I mean, Callum Wilson is injured. Do you want to buy another player that carries that stigma all the time?"
And that, my dear friends, is Simon Jordon hitting the nail square on the head.
While Dominic Calvert-Lewin managed 32 Premier League appearances last season putting to bed his injury concerns, he only managed seven goals and two assists, which suggests he was either not 100% or is nowhere near a £40million player.
When you compare that to Callum Wilson, who made just 20 Premier League outings, he managed nine goals and one assist. Over the past few seasons both have had their fair share of injury problems but Callum Wilson has consistently out-performed Calvert-Lewin, so although he's 32, swapping Wilson out for Calvert-Lewin would be a backward step.
That being said, we do trust Eddie Howe to get the best out of players. He's worked miracles before and if he genuinely sees something in DCL, then who are we to argue, really?
