Rumours around Newcastle United's interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha have started to really heat up.

The existence of a £62.5 million release clause has really opened the door for a flurry of activity to happen around Cunha this summer.

Despite Wolves' struggles this season, Cunha has been a standout for the Midlands club having bagged 15 goals and four assists in 29 outings this season.

That means Newcastle, should they be serious about making a move for the 25-year-old will face intense competition from other top clubs.

Matheus Cunha: Swooping into mediocrity

Matheus Cunha could reject Newcastle in favour of Premier League rival

Now Give Me Sport are reporting that Cunha has already dropped a big hint over his preferred destination, and it's not great news for Newcastle. Although, it should be.

Their report claims that Newcastle have made contact over Cunha, but they expect that the Brazilian prefers a move to Manchester United because he wants to sign for one of the 'Premier League's traditional big-six clubs'.

Yeah, okay, Manchester United are part of the 'big six', but has he seen where they are in the table? They're barely a step up from Wolves right now, why would he prefer a move to that crumbling club over a move to a club on the up?

Manchester United along with Tottenham are clinging to this 'big six' idea for dear life

We know there's no way this 'big six' idea is going to go away until other clubs are allowed to compete properly, but Man United and Tottenham are really hanging on to that title lately.

They may still have the big revenue streams, but on the pitch, they're nowhere near.

But if that's how Matheus Cunha sees his career going, then good luck to him. As good as he is, we have plenty of other targets in mind and ones that our fans have way fewer reservations about.
