Newcastle United's striker search continues after missing out on another target this week.

Depending on which side of the conspiracy fence you sit, Newcastle United either baited Liverpool into buying Hugo Ekitike this week, or Liverpool seemingly beat Newcastle to the signing of Hugo Ekitike this week. Pick your poison, but the bottom line is Ekitike looks Anfield-bound and Newcastle are still on the hunt for a new centre-forward to support Alexander Isak.

Newcastle chased Ekitike for three years, so we doubt there was no interest at all, but there was certainly a case to be made that Newcastle made their move for Ekitike to lure Liverpool into joining the race to divert them away from Alexander Isak.

We don't know, we weren't there, but the idea that we played Liverpool like a fiddle is a fun one, so we keep mentioning it. However, could the Reds still have the last laugh?

Newcastle have not made contact with Liverpool over Darwin Nunez

Newcastle have been linked, several times, to Liverpool's Darwin Nunez this summer. And while there was an interest before he went to Anfield, his performances in the Premier League really should have ended it entirely for Newcastle.

However, the rumour won't go away, and GiveMeSport recently asked Fabrizio Romano for an update on the Uruguayan and Newcastle United, where he said there was no contact.

"I’m not aware of concrete talks so far, but it’s still early for Newcastle as they just “lost” Ekitike."

Is Darwin Nunez as bad as we make him out to be?

It is still early, indeed, so we should absolutely not be getting so desperate that we're contemplating a move for a man who cost £85 million and twice appeared on Sky Sports' compilation of bad misses last season.

I know we're always really harsh on Nunez, because it's misses like those in the video that stick in the memory, but he was genuinely really good before he went to Liverpool, and even for the Reds, he has notched 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 appearances, which isn't too shabby.

Yet, we still don't want him at our club. Maybe because we'd have to go back on a lot of what we've said about him. Anyway, regardless of what he does on the pitch and whether or not he signs for Newcastle, he still looks like a Disney villain, even with the shaved head.
