Social media sleuths think they know who is the mystery player in talks with Newcastle United

Newcastle United are reportedly in talks with Crystal Palace over a move for England defender Marc Guehi.

The Magpies are said to be hoping to bring the 24-year-old centre-back to Tyneside his summer with Crystal Palace expecting to receive in excess of £60 million for his services.

However, as we mentioned this morning, inews are reporting that Newcastle are also working on another defender in parallel to the Guehi deal.

The report doesn't state whether it's an either/or situation or if the plan is to sign Guehi and an extra defender, although that seems unlikely.

Social Media believes the second man is Mattijs De Ligt

The second player is not named or even hinted at who it could be, but social media detectives believe it to be Dutch defender, Matthijs De Ligt who is currently plying his trade at Bayern Munich.

There was a rumour that Newcastle had been offered De Ligt earlier in the summer, as reported by Geordie Boot Boys, but that's really all there is to go on.

It could just be wishful thinking as De Ligt has an excellent reputation, but more importantly, is wanted by Manchester United and Newcastle fans would love nothing more than to deny Man United one of their primary targets.

Newcastle could battle West Ham for Logan Costa

Logan Costa is another name that has appeared overnight with Give Me Sport claiming that Newcastle are going to challenge West Ham for the 23-year-old Toulouse defender.

If the Marc Guehi deal goes through, chances are we'll never find out who the mystery man is, but at least Newcastle fans have something fun to speculate over again after a couple of really quiet weeks.
