Newcastle United look set to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Hove Albion before Sunday's PSR deadline in a desperate bid to avoid a points deduction ahead of next season.

It was originally believed that the £33million Brighton are set to pay the Magpies would have been enough to put to bed the PSR worries, but now Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has claimed that there could be more business to do as there still remains a shortfall.

Reports have differed on the amount Newcastle needed to make up in order to comply with PSR with it generally being believed to have been between £25million-£30million, but now it's believed it could be as much as £40million which obviously leaves the Magpies short even after the sale of Minteh.

That means Newcastle could be scrambling tomorrow to move on a player for around £10million to make sure the job is done.

Downie has admitted it will not be a big player who is sold

As Downie himself has said in a reply to his original post on X, it's not likely to be an Alexander Isak or Anthony Gordon level of sale, but could well be a first-team player.

It's also worth noting that although it seems pointless to accept the bid from Brighton for less than what we needed to comply with PSR, the amount does matter.

Being £7million over the three-year loss limit would see a less harsh punishment than we would receive had we still have been £40million over, so even if no business is done tomorrow, we'd likely only face a two-point deduction like Nottingham Forest were handed last season.

We have no idea who Newcastle could move on tomorrow

While any points deduction is less than ideal, two points is as easy to overcome as winning a game we'd have been expected to draw. It's one game going our way and we can forget about it.

As for who Newcastle can potentially sell tomorrow to avoid punishment is anyone's guess. There seems to be no real interest in any of our players that aren't indispensable despite there being plenty of players who could and indeed should be moved on.

Hopefully, it's just one more day of all this negativity and we can concentrate on incomings from Monday.
