Simon Jordan keeps missing the point as TalkSPORT host again tries to diminish Newcastle United's acheivement

A reported 8 million people worldwide tuned in to watch Newcastle United lift the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, and while that may not seem big when compared to other big sporting events, it was a record-breaking day for the League Cup.

This idea that it's 'only the EFL cup' is a tired one that has persisted for years, and while, yes, it is the runt of the litter in terms of major domestic honours, it is still counted as one of the big three, it is a major domestic trophy.

Historically some of the bigger clubs have placed a lesser emphasis on it, there's no denying that, but you try telling any Geordie that it's an insignificant trophy and see what happens.

Grown men were in floods of tears on Sunday as Newcastle lifted that trophy. It meant so much more than just being the third-rated English trophy, it wasn't about the title on the silverware for Newcastle fans, and that's what we feel a lot of people are missing.

Nobody is missing this point more than Simon Jordan, who has admitted he's delighted for the Newcastle fans, but then immediately takes a swipe at the significance of the competition. Even naming past winners like Luton, Birmingham and Swansea to try to diminish its significance.

He did it on Monday and he's done it again today, but again, he's absolutely missing the point.

Just like when the PIF took over at Newcastle and the debate about being owned by the Saudi state was raging, so many people failed to understand that it was as much about seeing the end of the bad times rather than anything else.

That's exactly what this was for Newcastle. It didn't matter which trophy it was, Newcastle just had to win a trophy to get that monkey off their back.

It's about what it represents going forward. No longer will we have to worry about the Wembley curse or the 56-year wait for silverware, we're free to move on and win more titles without cautiously looking over our shoulders.

So, Mr Jordan, you sit there and belittle the cup, but you ask any football fan what it means to lift a trophy and you'll see that it doesn't matter what it is, it still feels great.

In fact, ask Crystal Palace fans how they'd feel if they picked up the Carabao Cup, having never won a major honour.
