It's strange how two different people can watch the same thing and come away with two completely different takes on it. That's what makes football so magnificent and at times, emotionally charged.

It wasn't that long ago that I was stunned by what my esteemed colleague said about Sandro Tonali, that he was possibly the most overrated player we've had at Newcastle United for a while, and it genuinely got me wondering if I was looking at him through rose-tinted specs, because I genuinely think he's one of our best players.

But then, watching him in action last night, I noticed how many times his passes didn't hit their intended target and wondered if Rich actually had a point.

However, I have now realised that while focusing on those misplaced passes, I actually failed to notice just how exceptional he was overall. Even Rich handed him an 8/10 rating last night.

Sandro Tonali was in inspired form last night and was king of the duels

Tonali showed both sides of his game in one 10-second spell last night

There was a moment last night where Tonali dispossessed a West Ham player and rode the recovery challenge plus that of another defender before misplacing his pass, and that felt like it typified Tonali. A master in the duel, but sloppy with the end product.

Of course, it could genuinely be a case of our players not being on the same level as him and therefore aren't anticipating the pass where Tonali is playing it, who knows?

But there can be no doubt about Tonali's ability on the ball and winning the ball.

Sandro Tonali ended a 10-year run for Newcastle United last night

Indeed, last night the Italian won 100% of his nine duels, something that hasn't been achieved by a Newcastle United player since Chancel Mbemba did it in 2015 against Stoke City.

It just goes to show that you will only really see what you're looking for in a player's performance if you have an agenda, as I had last night.

That's probably why I'll never understand why Ryan Yates is actually a Premier League footballer. He might actually be good, but all I see is an absolute sh*thouse.
