Rudi Voller says Newcastle United nabbed a 'bargain' this summer when they signed 'exceptional' German international
Newcastle United's summer signings have been a mixed bag so far, but there can be no denying that the two German stars they brought in have been a huge success.
Malick Thiaw has been one of the signings of the season, and Nick Woltemade has surprised everyone with how quickly he's adapted to the Premier League after being thrown in at the deep end.
Woltemade, in particular, has been a success story given how much he cost the Magpies, who had to break their transfer record to bring in the 23-year-old for a deal worth up to £69 million.
The deal raised eyebrows in Germany, particularly from Bayern Munich, who had been trying to sign him all summer but refused to cough up what Stuttgart thought he was worth.
Rudi Voller says Newcastle picked up a bargain
Newcastle's 11th-hour raid only upset the Bundesliga giants, and representatives from the club have since branded Newcastle 'idiots' and have questioned the amount they spent.
However, not everyone in Germany feels it was a mistake, as former Germany International Rudi Voller has now told Sky in Germany that Newcastle have practically snapped up a bargain.
"I was already a regular presence at the Under-21 training ground and everyone knew he had talent. Now nobody's even talking about the €80million (£69.9million) transfer fee he paid to Newcastle. In the end, it was practically a bargain. His quality is truly exceptional."
If Newcastle overspent on a striker this summer, it wasn't on Nick Woltemade
Voller has a point. Since Big Nick has started knocking in the goals this season, all the talk about Newcastle overpaying seems to have died down.
Newcastle fans know that our striker situation was such that we were always going to have to pay big for someone who may not justify the price tag, and they did that ... with Yoane Wissa.
As good as Yoane Wissa is, at 29, it was a superb bit of business by Brentford to get £55 million for him. As for the almost £70 million we paid for Big Nick, well, that seems about right.
