After a long saga over the summer which saw Newcastle United devote way too much time and effort into the pursuit of one player, the Magpies ended up without the right-sided central defender they coveted.

Crystal Palace strung Newcastle along all summer with their games around the transfer of England centre-back Marc Guehi before the plug was pulled on transfer deadline day.

It's a mistake Newcastle are adamant will not be repeated and already more and more centre backs are being linked with a move to Tyneside.

We've seen a couple of new faces appear this morning but this afternoon has seen the return of an old favourite.

Newcastle are once again looking at Fikayo Tomori

A report from Italy via Milan Live has once again linked Newcastle with AC Milan's Fikayo Tomori.

The 26-year-old has five England caps but has been overlooked recently by the England set up despite being solid for AC Milan. Tomori was one of the standout players when AC Milan and Newcastle met in the Champions League last season.

It's now understood that Newcastle have revived their interest in the former Chelsea man and could be preparing a move.

Tomori wasn't exactly kind when he spoke about Newcastle's interest in the summer

It was believed that Newcastle tried and failed to bring in Tomori in the summer before they put all their eggs in the Guehi basket, but h when it came to moving to Tyneside seeing it as a backwards step.

The Magpies then moved to his centre-back partner Malick Thiaw who could also still be on Newcastle's radar.

It feels as though Newcastle will have to be performing very well in the Premier League to even get Tomori to look our way, but who knows how much of a difference Paul Mitchell can make to Tomori's feelings on Newcastle.
