Newcastle United have been keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck and are seriously weighing up a summer move.

A recent report suggested that Newcastle had already made contact with Schlotterbeck over a move earlier this season, but the German international has since picked up a knee injury that looks set to keep him out of action until October.

It looked as though that would put an end to Newcastle's interest in the 25-year-old for the summer at least, but now TeamTalk are reporting that this may not be the case.

They believe that Newcastle could be prepared to take a risk on him this summer despite his ongoing issue.

Newcastle could make a move for Nico Schlotterbeck despite his injury

Obviously, Schlotterbeck being injured would definitely make the medical tricky, but TeamTalk says that Newcastle will do a thorough evaluation on his injury and if they come to the conclusion that he will make a full recovery, they could go ahead with a deal.

Newcastle are desperate for more quality in defence, and there's absolutely no doubt how good Nico Schlotterbeck is, but we're not sure we're buying into this one.

For us, it makes more sense to wait until the January transfer window, which gives him time to recover, and they can scout him after his return to make a better judgment on whether he's worth the risk.

Newcastle would be better off waiting until January before making such a big call

Either way, we're going to be without a defender for a large chunk of the season if we decide that Schlotterbeck is the one for us, but at least by waiting, we get to save our money in case things don't go right with his recovery. Especially as Schlotterbeck is unlikely to come cheap.

Otherwise, we're left out of pocket and with a player who is a shadow of his former self, and we're no further forward.

If Newcastle were able to bring in a defender in the summer while keeping the money for Nico Schlotterbeck in January, that would make the most sense, but as for how achievable that is, we have no idea.
