Newcastle United's name was mentioned amongst a plethora of high-profile clubs tracking two of Dinamo Zagreb's latest stars.

Dinamo Zagreb has a good production line for top Croatian footballers, perhaps the most high-profile of which is Luka Modric - you know that player Kevin Keegan wanted at Newcastle but was told was too small for the Premier League and then went on to win a chuffing Ballon d'Or? That Luka Modric.

The latest players deemed to be the future of Croatian football, according to The Boot Room, are Petar Sucic and Martin Baturina, both 21.

Manchester United and Manchester City are set to do battle for the duo, but Newcastle United and a slew of other clubs aren't going to stand idly by and let them fight it out themselves.

Petar Susic and Martin Baturina have caught the eye of Newcastle United

Newcastle have been credited with an interest in Petar Susic and Martin Baturina

Both players are regular features in the Croatia national side which has never been short of talented players.

Baturina holds the honour of being compared to Modric and is already courting interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona with Susic being fancied by Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig.

Susic has been playing as a CDM for Zagreb this season making 12 appearances and bagging a goal and an assist, while Baturina has 11 appearances as an attacking midfielder with one goal and five assists to his name.

We don't see Newcastle getting too involved in these transfers

Midfield isn't an area Newcastle desperately need to improve, but when such young talent becomes available, it would be foolish not to at least be in the mix, so while we aren't going to hold our breath for a full-on transfer assault for the Croatian pair, we'd be surprised if we don't get involved in some capacity.

However, with the calibre of the competition for their signatures, we doubt it would be a worthwhile investment of our time to get too involved.

Lessons have to be learned after the Marc Guehi debacle, and the big lesson there was to simply walk away when it's starting to look like a fruitless endeavour.
