Newcastle United are still left wanting when it comes to trying to find at least one centre-forward to lead the line for them this season.

It's easy to forget with all the noise surrounding a certain Alexander Isak that Newcastle are competing in the Champions League this season, and without a striker on board, that's going to be a very difficult task.

While it's looking increasingly likely that Alexander Isak will remain on Tyneside, at least until January, whether he returns to the starting lineup is an entirely different matter.

With only Will Osula as a recognised striker available to Eddie Howe, and him not exactly filling everyone with confidence, the Magpies are desperate for a striker before next week's deadline.

Newcastle have £50m bid for Jorgen Strand Larsen rejected

The move for Yoane Wissa, which many journalists were so convinced would materialise, now looks unlikely with the forward having returned to training wth Brentford.

Newcastle have now pivoted to Wolverhampton Wanderers' Jorgen Strand Larsen, with the Express and Star writing that the Magpies have made their first move for the Norwegian today.

Their report claims Newcastle presented Wolves with a £50 million bid, which was rejected by the Midlands club, who insist that the forward is not for sale. Many other outlets, including The Athletic and Sky Sports, have latched on to the story, giving it plenty of credibility. Craig Hope has even added that Wolves have said there is no fee that could be agreed upon as he is simply not for sale.

Can we stop messing about with lowball offers now?

There had been many reports this summer suggesting that £60 million would be enough to get Wolves to part with their player, who only just signed on a permanent basis this summer for £25 million.

So if it's true that we only went in with a bid of £50 million, then someone at Newcastle really needs a slap because we do not have the time to play these games now. It was one thing to lowball at the start of the window when there was time to negotiate, but time is a luxury we do not have.

At this point, it's not even a case of whether or not Strand Larsen is worth £60 million. If it's a deal that could be done and it's a player Eddie Howe likes, then just bite the bullet and overpay. We can negotiate hard for Isak's replacement, but if we don't get Callum Wilson's successor over the line, then it's going to be a tough season.
