Lloyd Kelly left Newcastle United just six months after signing for the club as Italian club Juventus sealed a loan with an obligation to buy deal with the Magpies late in the January window.

Juventus initially wanted a loan with an option to buy for Lloyd Kelly, but Newcastle wanted something a bit more concrete and persuaded to make it an obligation to buy type of deal.

Newcastle are familiar with the deal structure after using such a deal to bring Lewis Hall from Chelsea. The left-back spent a year on Tyneside on loan before the £28 million deal was sealed in the summer.

It was suspected last season that Hall would have to make a certain number of appearances before the obligation was triggered, and that's why Eddie Howe wasn't using Hall as he wanted him to return to Chelsea. Thankfully none of that was true and the obligation was triggered by Newcastle's final league position. The deal was completed and Hall has been phenomenal this season.

Lloyd Kelly's move to Juventus hinges on European qualification

There's a similar trigger for Juventus' obligation to buy Lloyd Kelly for a deal worth around £20 million according to IlBianconero

Like with the Lewis Hall deal, the obligation is something that is out of the player's hands. If Juventus qualify for European competition this season then they must complete the deal for Kelly.

Juventus currently occupy fifth spot in Serie A and are very likely to qualify for some form of European competition, so the deal should go through.

Unless something goes drastically wrong Lloyd Kelly's move should be completed in the summer

It would take an enormous drop off in form for the remainder of the season for Juventus to be able to send Lloyd Kelly back, so we expect that Kelly will still be a Juve man next season.

The money from the deal should go straight into the summer transfer kitty for Paul Mitchell to build our squad back up.

Hopefully there'll be a few extra quid from winning the Carabao Cup too, albeit a relatively low £100,000. Every little helps.
