Whether or not you bought into the idea that Newcastle United were going to actually make a move to bring Elliot Anderson back to Tyneside, it makes for a good story.

Newcastle were forced to sell Elliot Anderson to comply with PSR, and it's a move that Eddie Howe has publicly spoken about being. a big regret.

The club weren't in a position to prevent his exit, and he's gone on to be a hugely successful player at Nottingham Forest and now for England.

Eddie Howe's comments about Anderson naturally gave journalists free rein to create a story suggesting that Newcastle were to launch an audacious £100 million bid to bring him back to the club.

115 charges? What charges?

Manchester City are weighing up a move for Elliot Anderson

It always just felt like fantasy writing to us, and as much as we'd love to see it happen, we don't believe there are any real plans for Newcastle to pursue Anderson.

On the off chance that there are, however, Newcastle may soon be feeling like their chances of capturing the 23-year-old are dwindling, with the Daily Mail reporting that Pep Guardiola is now keen to bring Anderson to Manchester City.

The financial muscle that City can bring to the table will make it almost impossible for Newcastle to compete.

Anderson leaving Newcastle made his career

That is, of course, unless Manchester City aren't bankrupted by huge fines and monumental points deductions for their 115 breaches of PSR ... like we're ever going to see anything happen with that.

We still feel that Anderson's leaving Newcastle was the making of his career. As much as we hated seeing him go, he wouldn't have got anywhere near as many minutes at Newcastle as he was given at Forest and we'd still be seeing him used as a substitute under Eddie Howe.

If he comes back to us, then it was all meant to be, but we just don't see it happening any time in the near future, unfortunately.
