Newcastle United may have already lost out on one of their potential summer targets already as reports suggest a new deal is in the offing.

There are still a couple of months go to before the summer transfer window opens but clubs are already hard at work identifying summer targets and Newcastle had reportedly had their eye on Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel as a potential summer signing.

However, now HITC reports that Nubel could be about to sign a new contract at Bayern Munich which will all but end Newcastle's interest in the 27-year-old.

The Magpies have had to make do without first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope for a large portion of this season and back-up 'keeper Martin Dubravka has hardly been a steady replacement.

Could Nick Pope be relegated to second-choice next season?

Eddie Howe wants a new goalkeeper this summer

It's believed that Eddie Howe will be looking to dip into the transfer market for a new goalkeeper, especially with Loris Karius leaving when his contract is up, but what remains to be seen is the standard of goalkeeper Howe moves for.

Alexander Nubel would have been seen as a first-choice addition which would have seen him competing directly with Nick Pope for the starting spot.

However, it now looks as though Nubel has been given assurances over his Munich future that could persuade him to stay, despite noted interest from the Premier League.

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale is another player linked with a move to Newcastle, and the whole reason he wants to leave the Gunners is that he's lost his starting place to David Raya, so he wouldn't want to come and play second fiddle to Pope.

Dubravka didn't like being bumped down to second choice last season

Then of course there's Dubravka who spat his dummy out last season when he realised he was bumped down to second choice and went on loan to Manchester United ... to be third choice. He won't take another bump down the order lightly and may want to leave.

We are in for a crazy summer as Newcastle have similar issues in so many positions so there could be many comings and goings.

One thing is for certain, we definitely need better cover in goal next season as Dubravka just isn't it anymore.
