Things could be about go from bad to worse for Newcastle United and Sandro Tonali.
Newcastle United's Dan Ashworth has launched an investigation into how and why the recruitment team were completely oblivious to Sandro Tonali's gambling addiction before his £55million move from AC Milan.
The big summer signing that had all of the Toon Army excited has shown flashes of what he can do for Newcastle but will now not be able to play for the remainder of the season after being slapped with a 10-month ban by the Italian Football Federation for betting while at Brescia and AC Milan.
Now The Daily Mail reports that The FA are about to launch their own investigation to see whether Tonali's betting continued after his move to England.
Newcastle should now definitely be bracing themselves for further action as it's highly unlikely that Tonali stopped what he was doing after he moved to England when he thought he was still getting away with it.
Of course, on the other hand, Tonali could have seen the transfer as a chance for a fresh start, a breakaway from his demons and maybe he used the opportunity to stop gambling.
It's a coin toss at best, but if the FA finds that he's broken betting rules while in England, he could face further punishment and therefore have his ban extended.
We can hope that they feel the ban and rehab order handed down by the IFF is punishment enough, especially given that he's not been in England that long, but it's an extra complication that he and the club can do without.
We're back to playing a waiting game, but right now that January transfer window is looking more and more important.
