Newcastle United have joined West Ham and Tottenham in pursuit of Icelandic attacking midfielder Albert Guðmundsson of Serie A side Genoa.

That is according to Calciomercato and Gazetta dello Sport who seem to think that the 26-year-old could be on his way to the Premier League this summer despite interest from other Italian clubs.

This season already, Guðmundsson has 11 goals and three assists in 24 outings for Genoa playing mostly as a second striker, although he has been used as a striker and a left winger.

Guðmundsson's versatility could be massive for Newcastle

Guðmundsson is thought to be worth around £30million and with Newcastle desperate for more attacking options owing to the horrendous injury record of our two current strikers, he could prove to be a bargain.

At 26 he's maybe a bit older than what we'd usually be looking at, but if there's anything in this rumour it does feel like Newcastle are looking for a striker who is first-team ready to back up Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.

His versatility would be very useful to Eddie Howe too and would give him options of experimenting with different formations, or even just using Guðmundsson as cover for several positions.

Newcastle getting into Europe again could have a huge bearing on this one

Being able to fight off the likes of Tottenham and West Ham could prove to be the sticking point. We know how much players seem to love the idea of London for some reason.

If Newcastle can mount a late charge this season, we could find ourselves in Europe again and that would strengthen our appeal.

We're not sure just how much truth there is in this one yet, but with two separate sources namechecking Newcastle alongside two different Premier League clubs, there could be something in it.
