Newcastle United are set to battle with Roma for the signature of German goalkeeper Alexander Nubel after both clubs made contact with the player.

The 27-year-old is contracted to Bayern Munich but is currently on loan at Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart.

He also had a spell at AS Monaco between 2021 and 2023, where he made 76 appearances.

The former Germany U21 star could make the move to England, but there is also interest from one of Italy's biggest clubs.

Contact has been made with Nubel

Reports from Germany suggest that both Newcastle and Roma have made directly made contact with the player, so should he wish to reject another year at Stuttgart and leave Bayern he'll have two great offers on the table for him.

However, reports also suggest that Nubel is enjoying his time at Stuttgart and feels at home there.

An opinion from the German report says that he should stay at Bayern and sign a long-term contract, for at least four or five years as the replacement for the ageing Manuel Neuer.

Nubel's contract runs out in 2025

The need for a new goalkeeper is immensely important, with Nick Pope injured, Martin Dubravka not the goalkeeper he once was and Loris Karius on his way out of the club there needs to be a new quality goalkeeper coming in.

Nubel's contract runs out in June 2025, meaning if Bayern did want to sell this summer is the last chance for the club to get a fee for him.

Valued at £9million, this seems like a solid low cost option for Newcastle to go for without breaking the bank.
