Newcastle United are set to miss out on 26-year-old Italian goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio who met with Juventus to arrange a move from Monza.

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, the Magpies offered the goalkeeper the chance to move to Tyneside in January but rejected the move.

Tuttosport also reported that Newcastle offered over £17million for Di Gregorio.

The Italian has also been monitored by Milan and Inter.

Newcastle's goalkeeper search continues

With Loris Karius' foot out the door, it leaves Nick Pope, an ageing Martin Dubravka and Mark Gillespie as goalkeeping options for the Magpies next season.

Signing a goalkeeper should be a top priority for Eddie Howe this summer. A solid, proven backup for Pope would put a lot of Geordie minds at ease.

Dubravka has struggled since coming in for the injured Pope back in November. The Slovakian international has only kept five clean sheets in 19 Premier League games this season.

If Newcastle were serious about getting Di Gregorio in, he would be available for a similar fee offered in the summer, the Turin-based paper suggests.

Di Gregorio would be a great addition to the squad

Di Gregorio has enjoyed a superb season for Monza. He has featured in 30 Serie A games, keeping 14 clean sheets.

Monza currently sit 11th in the table, comfortably away from any threat of relegation and in with a small chance of playing in a European competition next season.

According to WhoScored, he is a player who is strong when it comes to saving close range shots. Something Dubravka struggles with.

He also ranks amongst the top players in the Big five league in the last year for save percentage with 80.7%.
