Almost as ubiquitous as the Alexander Isak to Liverpool rumours are the stories linking Newcastle United with a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

In fact, the DCL to the Toon rumours have been around for years now, practically since Eddie Howe took charge at St James' Park.

It's no secret at this point that Eddie Howe is an admirer of the 28-year-old former Everton forward, having been linked with him in every transfer window since he took the hot seat in 2021.

There have been a few times that Newcastle seemed to have flirted with the idea of a move for the former England forward, but we'd be exaggerating if we said we'd ever really come close to bringing the striker to Tyneside.

Newcastle are keeping tabs on Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Three weeks ago, Dominic Calvert-Lewin announced his departure from Everton after nine years, and immediately, he was rumoured to be heading to Newcastle United. No move has been made yet and there have been reports that Newcastle have been offered the striker by his agent, and the club have politely turned them down.

But then, the same publication would publish another story an hour later, talking about the possibility of a move again. So, where are we? Well, the iPaper have provided an update on the state of play with Calvert-Lewin and Newcastle United.

"Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also back on Newcastle’s radar, with the striker’s representatives having held talks with the club last week as they look to drum up interest in the former England international. But sources sought to play down the idea that he is prominent in Newcastle’s recruitment thinking at the moment, suggesting that despite Howe’s admiration for the striker Calvert-Lewin is just an “option” who might be returned to later in the transfer window.

"Newcastle want a forward who can both play with Isak and is also prepared to compete with him for a first-team berth. The smart money, though, is that they sign a younger player with the versatility to play in other positions. Joao Pedro, their first choice for that role, signed for Chelsea and they may now cast the net overseas for an alternative."

Newcastle will turn to Dominic Calvert-Lewin if they get desperate enough

It sounds as though Newcastle may make an approach late in the window if they have failed to find literally anybody else, and honestly, under those circumstances, we'd take him.

If Dominic Calvert-Lewin is our Hail Mary attempt at signing a forward in this window after missing out on literally every other decent option, then I guess he'll do a job. He won't push Alexander Isak for a starting spot. He'll likely rarely even be available to play alongside him, either given his injury record, but if he can stay fit enough to be on alert should he be needed in case of an Isak and Will Osula emergency, then he's better than nothing.

He'd be like Callum Wilson 1.5. I can't upgrade him to 2.0; he's simply not as good as Wilson, but he is younger, at least.

Fingers crossed that we don't end up with this scenario, though, or we're going to end up having to run support groups every night of the week.
