Football mastermind Jose Mourinho has reportedly agreed a two-year deal with Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce to become their new manager, putting any links of a move to Newcastle United to bed.

The 61-year-old is set to replace İsmail Kartal who missed out on the Super Lig title by three points despite losing just one game all season.

Mourinho, who has managed in England at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur said that he had turned down numerous management offers but is now set to return to the dugout following his dismissal from Roma in January.

After his sacking, there was speculation that Mourinho could've come in for Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe but nothing ever materialised.

Jose Mourinho was the assistant to a Newcastle legend

At the start of his career, Mourinho was the right-hand man of Sir Bobby Robson. Originally working as an interpreter for the Durham-born manager at Sporting before joining him at Porto where they won six trophies in three years.

Mourinho followed Robson to Barcelona in 1996, where they won the domestic treble in their only season.

Mourinho has previously recalled times he has shared with Sir Bobby.

He once said: "One of the most important things I learnt from Bobby Robson is that when you win, you shouldn't assume you are the team, and when you lose, you shouldn't think you are rubbish."

Jose Mourinho has previously turned down the chance to manage Newcastle

The Portuguese head coach was manager of Benfica in 2000, but weeks after joining Robson offered him the opportunity to join Newcastle as his assistant.

Robson was so desperate for Mourinho to come to Newcastle he offered to step down after two years in charge to hand the reigns over to him.

Mourinho turned down the offer, saying he knew Robson would never step down at the club he loved.

'The Special One' posted a video to Instagram after beating Newcastle for the first time in July 2020. The video showed the sculpture of Sir Bobby in the player's entrance at St James' Park with the caption 'Finally boss...'.
