Eddie Howe has reportedly turned his attention back to Serie A for midfield reinforcements.

A report from Calciomercato has claimed that Newcastle are now eyeing 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder Ederson who currently plays for Serie A side Atalanta.

Newcastle are still assessing their options for replacing Sandro Tonali for the remainder of the season and haven't ruled out signing a player on a permanent deal to provide even more competition in the middle of the park.

Newcastle are keeping their options open for January transfer targets

Kalvin Phillips still remains the media's favourite for the switch, but Newcastle are keeping their options open and are now looking at Ederson from Atalanta.

Ederson: Another Brazilian in Eddie Howe's sights

The Serie A side are open to a sale but have stated that negotiations would have to begin at €40 million (£35 million) for the man who has four goals and one assist in 12 Serie A appearances this season. That's already a huge improvement on his one goal and one assist in 35 league outings last year.

Calciomercato believes that Newcastle will come in with an offer around the £35million mark which should be a positive first step in negotiations.

Newcastle could field an all-Brazilian midfield next year

If a deal goes through then Eddie Howe could be fielding an all-Brazilian midfield next year with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton alongside Ederson.

Ederson certainly looks like he has potential, but Kalvin Phillips and Ruben Neves will sit above him on the list for January targets, and rightly so given their Premier League experience.

We'll file this one in the unlikely drawer, however, as often, stories originating from the continent tend to be unreliable.
