Newcastle United fan Michael Oliver was the referee last night as Real Sociedad took on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last night.

Newcastle's former group-mates PSG emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over the Spanish side whose goal was scored by a familiar face to Newcastle fans.

Spain international Mikel Merino was the man who clawed a goal back for Sociedad scoring in the 89th minute. Merino had a short spell on Tyneside where we saw glimpses of the star he would become.

Merino's spell at Newcastle was criminally short

Unfortunately, Merino only lasted around a year at Newcastle after Real Sociedad activated his £10million release clause, much to the anger of Newcastle fans. Another masterstroke by Mike Ashley and Co.

Merino made that move back in 2018 and remains at Real Sociedad where he's made over 230 appearances scoring 25 goals and making 30 assists. He's now an established Spain international and has lived up to the promise he showed at Newcastle.

At full-time after the defeat to PSG last night referee Michael Oliver was caught on camera asking Merino to come back to St James' Park. The two shared a chuckle but we don't think Oliver was very convincing.

We'd take Mikel Merino back in a heartbeat

Merino has been linked with a return to Newcastle a few times in the past, but we don't think there was anything in it more than media rumours unfortunately.

We imagine if Newcastle were to try and bring him back he'd cost a lot more than the measly £10million we got for him when he left.

Ah well, nice try Mr Oliver, we appreciate the effort.
